Luz Varela

December 27, 1942 — September 11, 2024

Revere

With profound sadness, Luz Varela passed away on September 11, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. We celebrate the remarkable life of Luz Varela, affectionately known as Lucy. Born on December 27, 1942, to Daniel Varela Ormeño and Maria Adrocich Cordero, in the vibrant city of Lima, Peru. Luz radiated a warmth that was as captivating as her birthplace. She was known for her generous spirit, her compassionate nature, and her thoughtful attentiveness to those around her. Her journey led her to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1981, where she remained, sharing her love of family, faith, and community.

Luz was a beacon of strength and resilience. She was a self-employed maintenance worker, a testament to her unwavering determination and work ethic. She was also an active member of her community, serving as a founding director of La Hermandad del Señor de Los Milagros at the Most Holy Redeemer Church in East Boston, where she led the first Procession on October 18, 1992. She was a dedicated volunteer at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center Elder Service, always extending her hand to those in need. Luz's proudest achievement, however, was obtaining her United States citizenship in 2017, a milestone that encapsulated her courage and perseverance.

Luz's kitchen was the heart of her home, filled with the aroma of her delicious Peruvian cooking and the echo of laughter as she hosted family gatherings and welcomed friends. Her generosity was unparalleled, as was her devotion to her family, which was paramount to her.

As we remember Luz, we are reminded of her unwavering kindness, her steadfast faith, and her enduring love for her family and community. We invite you to share your memories and photos of Luz on her memorial page, to celebrate and honor the extraordinary woman that she was. May her generous spirit, compassionate heart, and thoughtful nature continue to inspire us all.

She was the devoted mother of Flor Oliva and her husband Eduardo Roman, Bettina Oliva, Ronald Oliva and his wife Carina Urbina; her beloved late son Jose (Pepucho) A. Oliva. She is also survived by her former husband Jose D. Oliva, and 6 loving grandchildren: Francis, Luis Manuel, Cynthia, Eddie, Jovanie and Angel; and her great-grandchildren: Lilly, Cataliyah, Leila, Amelia, Adryan and Damian. She was the dear sister to: Daniel, Beatriz, German, Rosa, Jesus, Guillermo and Juan Carlos. And she is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. And her special family friend Lisa Sullivan.

A Visitation will be held at the Paul Buonfiglio & Sons Funeral Home 128 Revere St, Revere, on Friday, September 20, 2024, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at The Most Holy Redeemer Church in East Boston at 10:00am.  (Please meet directly at the church) Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
