Gabriel Robert “Bob” Caggiano, 91, of Revere, and formerly of Winchester, on August 2nd. A longtime attorney, disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former longtime member of the administration of the late Massachusetts Governor John A. Volpe, died August 2, 2016 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in West Roxbury. Born and raised in the North End of Boston, the sixth child of the late Michele and Italia (Lanzilli) Caggiano, he attended the Boston Commerce High School. A disabled World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart, Mr. Caggiano joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served as a Private First Class for two years in the South Pacific Theatre involved in some of the worst battles of the war, including Guadalcanal, Okinawa and Pelelieu. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Mr. Caggiano attended Suffolk University and Suffolk University Law School where he received his LLB and JD and was licensed to practice within the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court and U.S. Supreme Court. After a brief time of employment with the Employer Insurance Company, he established his own private practice. He later left private practice to join the administration of the late Governor John A. Volpe as Chief Legal Counsel, Massachusetts Department of Public Works and successfully prosecuted corrupt officials of the Department of Public Works Waterways Division. He returned to private practice until 1965 when he was appointed by Governor Volpe as Director of the Bureau of International Trade within the Massachusetts Department of Commerce and served in that capacity for four years. An advisor to Governor Volpe on international trade issues, he was responsible for welcoming foreign dignitaries and traveled extensively representing the Commonwealth throughout Europe, promoting exports. An advocate of free trade, he was responsible for holding international trade seminars, bringing together business leaders, bankers, manufacturers and government officials in an effort to educate small and medium size businesses in the process of conducting international trade. Returning to private practice in 1969, Mr. Caggiano continued working as an attorney until his retirement in 2005 at the age of 80. A longtime resident of Winchester, where he raised his four children, he was a member of the American Bar Association, The Massachusetts Bar Association and The Justinian Law Society of Boston. A life member of the First Marine Division Association, he was also a member and Past Commander of the VFW Post #144 of the North End, Boston, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Boston. He was Past Grand Knight and longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, North End Council. An avid skier for most of his life, he was a member of the Clipped Wings Ski Club of North Conway, NH. He also enjoyed competitive sailing and was a former member of the Winchester Boat Club. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Ninetta (Torra) Caggiano, sons, Gabriel R. Caggiano, Jr. of California, and U.S. Air Force Col. (Ret.) Marshall Caggiano and his wife Roberta of Maryland, daughters, Michelle Rosmarin and her husband Richard of Wellesley, and Gabrielle Clemens and her husband Alfred of Weston, grandchildren, Elise Rosmarin, Gabrielle Caggiano, Marshall Clemens, and Maxwell Clemens, step grandchildren, Nikki, Justina and Mary, and sister, Louise DeFazio of Walpole, MA. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Louise (Moynihan) Caggiano in 2006, four sisters, Jeannette Bennett, Caroline Storella, Mary Ferrara, and Rose Caggiano, and a brother, Tony Caggiano. Funeral from the Paul Buonfigluio & Sons-Bruno Funeral Home 128 Revere St, Revere Wednesday August 10th at 9:00am. Funeral Mass in Saint Anthony Church at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4-8pm. Interment Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
